About Chikballapur District (Karnataka)

Historically, Chinna Ballaporumis the original name of the Chikkaballapura which was derived from the Telugu word 'Chinna' which meant small, 'balla' meant the measure to quantify food grains, and 'porum' meant town. So, the meaning of the word was the place where people generally use some small measures to quantify the food grains in ancient times. The city was formed by Marigowdason who was the son of Avathi Mallabiregowda and an interesting story is also associated with the creation of this place. When the place was under the rule of Baichegowda, the king of Mysore attacked the fort but had to withdraw due to the interference of Marathas. Dodda Byregowda, who came to power after Baichegowda, resumed control of the territories seized earlier by Mysore. In the year 1762, during the rule of Chikkappanayaka, the region was captured by Hyder Ali for a period of 3 months. Later, Chikkappanayaka agreed to pay an amount of five lakhs pagodas, then only Hyder Ali ordered his army to leave the area. It was also ruled over by Wodeyars of Mysore and British. After the defeat of Tipu Sultan in the hand of British, it also came under the administration of Wodeyars of Mysore. Now, it is the part of Karnataka.

There a number of famous persons from different fields. Venkate Gopala Gowda was born on 6th October, 1951. He is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. He was a former Chief Justice of Orissa High Court. M. Visvesvaraya, KCIE (Sir MV) was born in 1861 and died in 1962. He was an Indian engineer, scholar, statesman and the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. He was awarded with the Bharat Ratna, in the year 1955. Every year, Engineer's Day is celebrated on his birthday, 15th September.

Geographically, the district has total 4,244 sq. km. area and occupies the ranks 24th in State and 278th in India. It lies at 13°43' N latitude, 77°72' E longitude and 921 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 6.49% forest area of total geographical area. The climate of the district remains pleasant almost throughout the year. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1217.2 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administrative wise, it is divided into 6 sub-districts namely Gauribidanur, Gudibanda, Bagepalli, Chikballapur, Sidlaghatta and Chintamani. Moreover, the district comprises 8 towns and 1,324 villages. Kannada is its administrative language. The district of Chikkaballapura came into existence on 10th September, 2007 in the state of Karnataka with an allotted district code of 582. Its district Headquarters is located at Chikkaballapura which is located at a distance of 59 km. from the State Capital.

According to 2011 census, the district has a total number of 2,82,311 households with a total population of 12,55,104 comprising 6,36,437 are males and 6,18,667 are females. The density of population of the district is 296 persons per sq km. The sex ratio is pegged at 972 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 953 (females per 1000 males). As per 2011 census the percentage of major religions practiced by the people of this region is Hindu at 87.65% and Muslim at 11.78%. The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 9.23% including 8.88% were males and 9.60% were females. According to the 2011 census, the principal languages in the district are Kannada, Telegu and Urdu with 59.37%, 27.07% and 11.60%.In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 17,220 out of which 8,965 were males and 8,255 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 10,187 out of which 6,312 were males and 3,875 were females.

Economically, the district is dependent on agriculture primarily. The Gross District Domestic Product during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 20,54,320 lakh at current price and Rs. 14,84,957 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Net District Domestic Product during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 17,98,216 lakh at current price and Rs. 12,77,198 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, at factor cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 1,32,417 at current price and Rs. 94,050 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

Education wise, according to 2011 census, the literacy rate in the district is 69.76% including 77.75% are males and 61.55% are females. The total literate population in the district was 7,83,222 out of which 4,42,158 were males and 3,41,064 were females. The district has a number of primary, secondary, higher secondary schools and graduate and under graduate colleges. There are two notable schools under Kebulonik namely Kebulonik primary and Kebulonik secondary schools. Navodaya Vidya Samasthe is a private English medium school, founded in 1987. In 2005, Nanjamma Teachers Training Institute was opened. There is also an engineering college namely Adichunchanagiri Institute of Technology (AIT), founded in the year 1980. Currently, it is affiliated by Visvesvaraya Technological University. Different courses are offered by this institute. Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Information Science and Engineering Industrial Production Engineering are Graduation courses. Postgraduate courses are provided in Civil, Mechanical, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science, etc. BBM (Bachelor of Business Management) and MBA (Master of Business Administration) are also done. There is another engineering college namely Sri Jagadguru Chandrasekaranathaswamiji Institute of Technology also known as SJCIT, established in 1986. It provides graduate courses in Aeronautical engineering (Intake-120), Civil Engineering (Intake-120), Mechanical Engineering (Intake-120) etc and under graduate courses in Machine Design, Industrial Automation and Robotics, Digital Communication and Networking, Computer Science & Engineering etc. Visvesvaraya Institute of Advanced Technology (VIAT) is a research institute which conducts researches in embedded technology, software quality, agricultural engineering and bioengineering.

Several famous political personalities belong to the district. Marpadi Veerappa Moily (born 12th January, 1940) is an Indian politician from Indian National Congress. He is representing the Chikballapur constituency in the 16th Lok Sabha. He has served as the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister of Corporate Affairs and Minister of Power in the Indian government. He became the former Chief Minister of Karnataka in 19th November, 1992. He is the current Member of Parliament from Chikkabalapur consistency and All India Congress Committee General Secretary in charge of Andhra Pradesh. He is a close adviser for the Congress Leader Sonia Gandhi.

The district has a number of famous historical and religious places to visit. These places are Nandi Hills, Chintamani, Gummanayaka Fort, Rangasthala, Muddenhalli, Kaivara, Tippudrop, Jakkalamadagu Dam, Nehru Guest House, Bhoganandeeshwara Temple, Srinivasa SagaraKere, Viswesharaiah Tomb, Papagni Matta Chikballapur, Yoganandishwara Temple, Surasadmagiri Hill, Aiyappa Temple, Chitravathi Temple Chikballapur and Pushkarani Nandi Grama. In the year 2016, there were 16,66,000 Domestic Tourist and 2,070 Foreign Tourist who visited above places.
