About Sidhi District (Madhya Pradesh)
Sidhi district, a part of Rewa division is a district of Madhya Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Sidhi town. The district is renowned for its rich cultural roots and natural beauty. Moreover, the history of the Sidhi district is considered as the glorious history of the Madhya Pradesh state. The district possesses a rich and varied culture. It acts as a north eastern boundary of the Madhya Pradesh state. The place is blessed with the most popular Sone River which made its soil very fertile. The district is abundant in mineral resources and its coal deposits are extremely important for the major industries across the country. The mesmerising natural sceneries of the Kaimur, Kehejua and Ranimunda hills which dazzle with flowers, flame of forest and intoxicated by the sweet smell of mahua flowers are really very amazing.
Geographically, the district lies at 24°40'N latitude, 81°88'E longitude and 272 m Altitude. In the year 2023, there was a total 40.81% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 4,851 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 37th in the state and 237th in India. It is bounded by Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh on the North, Singrauli district on the North East, Koriya district of Chhattisgarh on the East and Rewa district on the West. The climate of the district remains pleasant throughout the year except the summer. The actual rainfall in the district was 1337.9 mm in the year of 2024-2025.
Administration wise, the district is divided into six tehsils namely Gopad Banas, Churhat, Rampur Naikin, Majhauli, Kusmi and patpara Sihawal. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 4 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 4 towns and 1,055 villages. Th administrative language in the district is Hindi.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 11,27,033 out of which 5,75,912 are males and 5,51,121 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 957 females for every 1000 males. Furthermore, the district has an estimated projected population of 13,74,406 comprising 7,03,302 males and 6,71,104 females for the year 2026. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019–21), the district has an estimated sex ratio of 1,053 females and a child sex ratio of 832 females per 1,000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 23.72% including 22.74% were males and 24.75% were females. The population density in the district is 232 persons per sq. km. In the year 2023 the number of live births in the district was 30,334 out of which 15,723 were males and 14,608 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 6,737 out of which 4,170 were males and 2,566 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 95.61% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 99.08%.
Since major parts of its population are tribal hence their main occupation is agriculture. Even today also they stick to the old methods of cultivation. The chief agricultural products in the district are paddy, maize, black gram, green gram, soybean, pigeon pea, etc. The industrial growth of the district is not sufficient. In the name of industry, Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station is the notable one which provides electricity over a wide area. The popular Mahua flower of the district is generally use by the tribes to prepare a different type of wine. In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj declared Chamba as one of the country's 250 most backward districts and currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). In the year 2022-2023 the Gross Domestic Product in the district was Rs. 14,01,900 lakh at current price and Rs. 6,52,441 lakh at constant 2011-2012 prices. The Net Domestic Product in the district during the period 2022-2023 was Rs. 12,95,165 lakh at current price and Rs. 5,82,655 lakh at constant 2011-2012 prices. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost in the district during the period 2022-2023 was Rs. 96,880 at current price and Rs. 43,583 at constant 2011-2012 prices.
The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its recognised educational institutions are Rampur Naikin Higher Secondary School, Kusami Government Higher Secondary School, Majhauli Higher Secondary School, Govt. Girls Degree College, CMIT College, Adarsh Girls College, Tata College, Kamla College, IPS Academy, SIT College & Group of Institutions, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 64.43% including 74.44% are males and 54.07% are females. In addition, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for the period July 2023-June 2024 estimated literacy rate in the district is 73.51% including 82.29% are males and 65.40% are females (Age 7 Years and Above).
Arjun Singh, an eminent Indian politician and the Union Minister of Human Resource Development in the Manmohan Singh cabinet (2004-2009) was born on 5th November, 1930 at Churhat in the Sidhi district. He served as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for three times and the Governor of Punjab for a short period of time. He was a member of Indian National Congress party.
The district has a great variety of centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Sanjay National Park is located in the Sidhi district and Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh is a part of the Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve. The area encompasses by the park is 466.7 sq km. Some other prominent places of interest in the district are Kaimur, Kehejua, Ranimunda Hills, etc.
