About Kheda District (Gujarat)

Kheda district is a district of Gujarat state with its administrative headquarters located at Nadiad city. Earlier the district was popularly known as Kaira district. The district was bifurcated in the year 1997 and its southern part becomes the Anand district. At that time the Charotar region was under the Kaira district which comprised four talukas namely Anand, Borsad, Nadiad, and Petlad. During the time of the division of the district, Nadiad taluka came under the Kheda district and the other three went with Anand district. In the first half of the 20th century when the Indians were struggle for independence, at that period of time the Patidars of all areas of the Kaira district along with the Charotar region resisted the British in a number of standoffs. The natives of the district were also actively involved in some most important movements of that period i.e. Kaira anti-tax campaign of 1913, the Borsad satyagraha of 1923 and the Bardoli satyagraha of 1928 is remarkable. The district came into existence in the year 1763.

Sir Chandulal Madhavlal Trivedi, an eminent Indian administrator and civil servant was born at Kapadwanj in the Kheda district. He served as the President of the Bharat Scouts and Guides from February, 1967 to October, 1973. The Government of India honoured him by the prestigious Padma Vibhushan Award in the year 1956.

Geographically, the district lies at 22°75'N latitude, 72°68'E longitude and 21 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 2.23% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 3,953 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 17th in the state and 304th in India. It is bounded by Gandhinagar district and Sabarkantha district on the north, Anand district and Vadodara district on the south, Panchmahal district on the east and Ahmedabad district on the west etc. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summer. Most of rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 803.4 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 10 tehsils namely Balasinor, Kapadvanj, Kathlal, Kheda, Mahudha, Matar, Mehmedabad, Nadiad, Thasra and Virpur. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 7 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 12 towns and 618 villages. The administrative language in the district is Gujarati.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 22,99,885 out of which 11,85,727 are males and 11,14,158 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 940 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 13.62% including 12.62% were males and 14.70% were females. The population density in the district is 582 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 31,659 out of which 16,437 were males and 15,221 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 19,726 out of which 11,720 were males and 8,001 were females. As per 2011census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 87.00% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Gujarati with 97.35%.

Most of the population in the district are engaged in cultivation of cotton and tobacco since the economy of the district is solely based on it. Kheda district is commonly known as the Golden Leaf because it produces highest quantity of tobacco in the state. It is the second largest producer of tobacco in the state. Some other chief agricultural products found in the district are potatoes, tomatoes, onions, cumin seeds, chilly, ginger, fennel seeds, and turmeric. The district is well developed in terms of industrial sector. The district has some industries in sectors like electrical equipments, textiles, paper, food processing, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industrial sectors helps in its economy to a great extent. The district is also rich in mineral resources. The mineral resources available in the district are bauxite, limestone and quartz.

The district is an abode of numerous reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its recognised educational institutions are RH Patel Institute of Management, C.B. Patel Arts College, U.T.S. Mahila Arts College, M.D. Shah Commerce College, B.D. Patel Arts College, Dharmsinh Desai Institute of Technology, Kheda Arts and Commerce College, M.P. Patel College of Pharmacy, Hari Om Pharmacy College, Shri R.N. Amin Commerce College, S.H. Desai Arts College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 82.65% including 91.31% are males and 73.49% are females.

Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel, one of the leaders of the Indian National Congress and one of the founding fathers of the Republic of India was born on 31st October, 1875 at Nadiad city in the district. He was the first Home Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister of the Independent India.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Santram Temple, situated in Nadiad of Kheda district is devoted to Santram Maharaj, considered as the reincarnation of Hindu Trinity i.e. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. Shri Swaminarayan Temple, situated in Vadtal has three idols including Lakshmi Narayan at the centre. There is also a dharamsala within the boundary of temple. Shree Mahalakshmi Temple is another marvellous temple of the district where one can found a pure marble structure of Goddess Mahalakshmi. Dinosaur and Fossil Park is an extraordinary park of the district which has a vast collection of fossils and fossilized eggs of dinosaur that predicts to be some about 10 m long. Dakor and Wanakbori Thermal Power Station are some other places of interest in the district.
