About Kabeerdham / Kawardha District (Chhattisgarh)

Historically, Kabirdham is named after Guru Gaddi Pith of Kabirpanth (1806-1903). Its earlier name was Kawardha. It was a princely state which was established in the year 1751 by Mahabali Singh. In this way the place was ruled by different rulers during different periods of time. On 2nd July, 1998 the government of Madhya Pradesh state decided to create a new district, Kawardha by combining the earlier Kawardha tehsil of Rajnandgaon district and Pandariya tehsil of Bilaspur district. Then the town of Kawardha was announced as the headquarters of the newly created district. The region of Kabeerdham was emerged as a separate district on 6th July, 1998. Earlier, the name of the district was Kawardha but it changed to Kabeerdham on 17th January, 2003 by then chief minister of the state Ajit Jogi on the occasion of sixth century birth celebration of Dhani Dharm Das, the founder of Kabir panth in Chhattisgarh.

Geographically, the district has a total 4,235 sq km. area and occupies the ranks 16th in State and 289th in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 22°01'N latitude, 81°24'E longitude and 353 m altitude. It is bounded by Dindori district to the North, Mungeli district and Bemetara district to the East, Rajnandgaon district to the South, Balaghat district and Mandla district to the West. The Maikal mountain ranges of Satpura border the Northern and Western parts. In the year 2019, the district had total 36.55% forest area of total geographical area. The climate of the district remains hot and humid during the summers. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1288.4 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administrative wise, the district is divided into 4 sub-districts, 6 towns and 1,006 villages. Hindi is its official language. The district of Kabeerdham came into existence on the 6th July, 1998 in the state of Chhattisgarh with an allotted district code of 407. Its district headquarters is located at Kawardha, situated at a distance of 118 km. from the state capital.

Demographically, according to 2011 census, the district has a total number of 1,76,758 households with a total of 8,22,526 including 4,12,058 are males and 4,10,468 are females. The density of population of the district is 194 (persons per sq km). The sex ratio is pegged at 996 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 983 (females per 1000 males). As per 2011 census the percentage of major religions practiced by the people of this region is Hindu with 94.35% of the total population. The population growth rate during the period 2001-2011 was 40.71% including 41.13% were males and 40.29% were females. According to 2011 census, the percentage of the principal languages of the region is Hindi with 99.36%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 18,339 out of which 9,531 were males and 8,807 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 4,839 out of which 2,800 were males and 2,038 were females.

Economic wise, agriculture is the prime source of income for the natives of the district. The GDDP or Gross District Domestic Product during the period 2006-07 was Rs. 1,00,665 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 70,241 lakh at Constant Prices during the period 1999-2000. The NDDP or Net District Domestic Product during the period 2006-07 was Rs. 91,809 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 63,906 lakh at Constant Prices during the period 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, at factor cost during the period 2006-07 was Rs.14,461 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 6,349 lakh at Constant Prices during the period 1999-2000.

Education wise, according to 2011 census, the literacy rate is 60.85% including 72.98% are males and 48.71% are females. The total literate population of the district is 4,14,167 out of which 2,48,503 are males and 1,65,664 are females. The district has several primary, secondary and higher secondary schools as well as graduation colleges.

Raman Singh, the present Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh state since 7th December, 2003 was born on 15th October, 1952 in the district. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was the part of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly consecutively in 1990 and 1993. Vishwaraj Pratap Singh, the Raja of Kawardha State from 1959-1971 had joined the politics and became the member of Akhil Bharatiya Ram Rajya Parishad was born on 18th October, 1932 in the district. He represented the Kawardha constituency in the Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh from 1962-1967.

The district has numerous famous historical and religious places to visit. These places are Bhoramdeo Temple, Madwa Castle, Cherki Castle, Silly Pcrahi, and Jain Pilgrimage Bella. During the year 2018, there were 1,12,606 domestic tourists and 72 foreign tourists who visited the above places. Bhoramdeo Temple is a complex of Hindu temples of the God Shiva. The main temple namely Bhoramdeo temple is made up of stone. It is also called "Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh". Another significant temple is Madwa Mahal (means marriage hall) or Dullhadeo. Cherki Mahal, the last temple which is situated in a thinly forested area. A Shiva Linga form which is not carved is founded here.
